Protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal lasts YEARS. Not a few weeks or a month or two like opiate withdrawal. Years. Nobody should ever have to go through that.
Now, he is also feigning ignorance about the dangers of benzodiazepine addiction instead of dealing with it head on and saying “I was an addict.” Because he most certainly was.
Unfortunately he is trying to play some kind of victim card. Instead of taking responsibility for his own actions and “cleaning his room.”
I lost a lot of respect for this man with the way he has handled this situation. He has done the opposite of what he preaches about.
He is preaching ideals. The preaching and the preacher are still worth their words wether or not they live up to them. It’s the nature of what they do. They speak what we need to hear. He did not get so popular because he always did what he said, rather because so many needed to hear what he said.
Maybe we should separate who he is now from before due to potentially permanent chemical changes to his brain.
Maybe he does not currently see what he needs to do, or he is still addicted to some extent at least (maybe even still using). Maybe he just learned or is still learning how to understand this. Perhaps one day he will be able to look back and clearly see things the way you do from the outside with your convenient perspective.
I could just defending him because I still benefit from his speeches to this day and know others have too. Maybe i’m not taking away enough credit from him because I feel it’s not justified after all he has done for so many including myself.
He had a first hand experience of what happens when you "take the heaviest load you can bear and carry it". It fucking breaks you, that's what happens. If you're lucky, it breaks you before your hubris makes you reach for "chemical assistance" to make the load more bearable. Peterson wasnt lucky.
I don’t think any worse of Jordan because he became dependent on benzodiazepines. I have nothing but empathy In that regard. It’s hell on earth and is quietly becoming an epidemic that will have to be addressed in the near future.
No, my problem lies with how little personal responsibility he has taken for it. He is an informed, intelligent, pragmatic, educated human being. To claim he didn’t know they would be addictive or that they weren’t for long term use is absurd. Especially considering what his field was.
I know of the stress he was under and nearly losing his wife is something I can only hope I never have to go through. It just doesn’t seem like he has been honest with himself and his fans.

Personal responsibility.
