It has happened repeatedly throughout history. The Chinese did it when the dynasties changed. After WW2 both the Japanese and the Germans had history rewritten. The Spanish did it to the Incas and the Aztecs. Communism in Russia. Countries being formed instead of past Empires and territories.

History has been repeatedly reinvented and retold. Until today it pure academia. It is otherwise general knowledge outside of specialist subjects. Because it is a lot of nonsense. The only thing you learn about history is it's a lie and other commonly told stories that have become the paradigm.
