Isn't Peru chopping down the Amazon real toxic for gold, a huge rush with tens of thousands of people currently, and in other parts for metals like copper and minerals. But the run off is toxic and it has massively deforested a large area of the Amazon polluting many surrounding waterways. No worse than its neighbour's also doing likewise. But a huge gold rush currently.

Peru also has really bad quakes and active volcanoes.

Perhaps not quite as prime real estate as other places.
