Hallucination possibly? The stories I know of are of a dark night, far from anyone on the same bridge. I think that there was a hallucination by one person, told everyone, now when you go down that road, everyone knows of the story and are actively looking out for it.
Your mind is playing tricks on you because you're actively looking for the mothman
