If it wasnt for the projection type beam reaching to land, id say a portal. Id probly assume CERN or a different collider is nearby (150miles~)
But this was CERTAINLY a blue beam test imo
What do people think this was, any good theories? I don't buy that it could have been a missile.
Swamp gas.
I knew it! That Swamp Gas fellow can't keep getting away with it...
I looked into this when it happened and it ended up being an out of control rocket booster. someone made a gif pic showing how it creates the effect.
Yeah, unfortunately it's just a rocket. If you get the full video, after the spiral stops it does the same thing the spacex rockets do as they punch through the upper atmosphere.
I was a freshman in HS when this happened. It was all the rage in my school at the time. Was told at the time it was a military missile test of some kind. I highly doubt it though.
yeah it's weird, I do get the feeling many of the photos and videos are definitely doctored. if it was just a missile, why the need for so much fudging?
to answer my own question, I guess it could be argued that they would doctor it so rival militaries don't get as accurate a glimpse at what tech they are using. hmm.
Spiral seems to be parallel to lenses. So, highly likely it is some kind of lens flare.
I think spiral should have been perpendicular or parallel to the object trail, if it was self-dependent phenomenon, shouldn't it?
In any case, cool photo.
I think it's too persistent to be a lens flare. The whole thing lasts over a minute if you check out some vids of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUZlZ4kbNFY&feature=emb_logo
And I see what you're saying about the angle between the coil-like phenomenon propagating through the air and the spiraling halo of light produced, but I think the photo I posted just doesn't do a good job of capturing that, if you watch the vid you'll see the halo is perpendicular to the coil.
And that looks absolutely great!
Really it could be broken/intentionaly spinned rocket at very high altitude. May be even Russian, we have a space launching site in Plesetsk, not so far from Norway. On video, it fly straight, but began to spin after flash. Something blow up and blast make it spinning, then burning fuel began to leak through breach. You know, we fucked up our space program. :)
Being child I saw very distant night launches few times in 80-s and by visible movement speed and lighting of tail from sun over the horizon it looks very similar. However, I never saw such spirals, only changes in tail shape, when the next stage began to work, may be that rockets I saw just flied without problems? :)
That's cool, I've never seen anything like that firsthand. Yeah perhaps it could be a rocket, but it moves in such a slow, controlled manner. And some of the people filming are close enough that you'd expect to see something more at the front of it in that case. When it ends there's no explosion either, just that ominous-looking black void. Truly a unique looking phenomenon.
It could be very far away and very high. So you see it slow, just like a plane movement far away.
Rocket itself is very tiny, relative to the gaseous tail spreading wide on the edge of atmosphere, where it expand widely without nearly any resistance from the air.
Fuel just burned out silently, so you just see black sky through the expanding hole in gases.
Absolutely. Even without spiral it was an amasing entertainment. I saw something with multiple engines, it looked like giant strings expanding behind rocket for a while and collapsing again into the twined rope-like tail, faiding in night sky, when second stage began to work, tail color and number of strings changed. Then tail is just cutted off, and giant twined two-piece rope in the sky slowly faded out.
Unfortunately there is no flidghtradar24 like service to show rocket launches, so it could be hard to check my theory. :)
Really, I tink that aliens, or who they are, would not make a large scale entertaining light shows in the sky for us. Yet. :) Usually they hide carefully, and all we have is murky blurry spots on shaking camera.
Ok, you do make good points. I can visualize all that. I'll have to look into the rocket/ rocket booster theory and see if I can find other similar examples.
I tried to find something close to what I saw as a child and immidiately find that: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/spacex-rocket-lights-sky-it-carries-satellites-california-n832301 or even better - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2K96aY0tLw Looks close, but mine were two-colored. May be due to different fuels in different stages. Not so magnificent as Norway show, but....
I remember seeing that SpaceX vid a couple years ago. Spectacular footage.
