The Environmental Working Group (EWG) noted in a statement on Monday that 87 percent of 650 children tested had detectable levels of glyphosate, according to the CDC’s analysis.
“Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the country, yet until now we had very little data on exposure,” said Alexis Temkin, EWG toxicologist. “Children in the U.S. are regularly exposed to this cancer-causing weedkiller through the food they eat virtually every day.”
Temkin added that the Environmental Protection Agency should “take concrete regulatory action to dramatically lower the levels of glyphosate in the food supply and protect children’s health.”
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer—an arm of the World Health Organization—classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” after a 17-member panel of scientists reviewed almost 1,000 peer-reviewed, published studies on the potential carcinogenicity of the chemical, along with others.
More recently in April 2019, the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released an analysis (pdf) regarding studies that connected glyphosate to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, and recommended monitoring children’s exposure to glyphosate.
Other experts have warned that the chemical’s use in the United States and around the world in agriculture has prompted an increase in autism, diabetes, cancer, allergies, and other chronic conditions.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found a widely-used herbicide chemical that has been linked to cancer in the majority of urine samples collected from children and adults in the United States.
The health agency released the results of its National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) last month, which showed that over 80 percent of urine samples tested by the CDC contained glyphosate.
Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide and is the active ingredient in the popular Roundup brand, among others, as it is highly effective at managing invasive and noxious weeds.
NHANES, which began in the early 1960s, is a program of studies that are designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children across the country.
The survey found glyphosate in 1,885 of 2,310 urine samples collected from people aged 6 years and older in 2013 and 2014. Nearly a third of the samples came from kids, ranging in age from 6 to 18.
Food is the main route of exposure to glyphosate for children aged 18 and under, according to CDC researchers. Given that the herbicide is used as a pre-harvest drying agent, or crop desiccant—a chemical applied to crops to dry them out more quickly before harvest—the pesticide is highly likely to make its way into foods.
HOWEVER
Since glyphosate was first registered, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has continuously reviewed and reassessed its safety and uses, most recently releasing an interim decision for registration review in January 2020.
‘Unlikely to Be a Human Carcinogen’
According to the EPA, the agency, “continues to find that there are no risks of concern to human health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label.”
“EPA also found that glyphosate is unlikely to be a human carcinogen.”

However, there continues to be intense debate about whether or not glyphosate is indeed carcinogenic.
Lawsuits Pile Up
Glyphosate was first used in the Roundup herbicide developed by Monsanto in 1974 and marketed until 2018, when the German company Bayer A.G. bought Monsanto for $63 billion.
However, Bayer has faced tens of thousands of lawsuits by people—predominantly those working in agriculture, maintenance, and landscaping industries that are likely to be significantly more exposed to the chemical—claiming that Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides caused their cancer.
Among the cancer claims, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the same form of cancer highlighted in the 2019 U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry analysis, is prevalent.
Plaintiffs argue that the company failed to adequately warn the public about health risks associated with glyphosate and Roundup.
Bayer maintains the product is safe but announced last year that it would replace glyphosate from all lawn and garden products sold in the United States by 2023.
“It is important for the company, our owners, and our customers that we move on and put the uncertainty and ambiguity related to the glyphosate litigation behind us,” Bayer CEO Werner Baumann said in a statement at the time.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Bayer A.G.’s appeal to review a million-dollar lawsuit filed by a Californian man who is suing the company, alleging that over 20 years of Roundup use has caused him to develop cancer.
The move paves the way for thousands more lawsuits against the company to ensue.

Scientific progress has always been a struggle between the status quo and those who challenge it and seek new knowledge.
When Galileo advanced Copernicus’s idea that Earth revolves around the sun, he was labeled a heretic by the astronomical establishment and the Catholic Church and put under house arrest.
When Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis observed that women were dying in childbirth because physicians in the obstetric hospitals were not washing their hands, physicians took offense. He was committed to an insane asylum in 1865 and died there, a victim of the establishment’s censorship. His research showed that hand washing with chlorinated lime could reduce deaths below 1 percent, but its importance was not understood at the time.
Later, these heretics became recognized as heroes.
Fast-forward to the 1980s, when the AIDS virus began to spread rapidly in the United States Fauci led that research effort. It was the beginning of an explosion of new treatments.
Yet two years ago, when COVID-19 struck—a disease as unfamiliar as AIDS was in ’80s—the impulse among government health officials was to suppress experimentation and debate.
Democratic lawmakers in California are pushing to require the state medical board to penalize doctors for spreading “misinformation,” defined as disagreeing with government bodies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or “contemporary scientific consensus.”
As Wall Street Journal’s Allysia Finley points out, that would mean legal penalties against doctors who prescribe drugs like the antidepressant Fluvoxamine, which has shown strong results in clinical trials even though it is not yet Food and Drug Administration-approved for use expressly against COVID-19.
The standard of care to save COVID-19 patients has evolved rapidly, explains Finley. At the outset, doctors put severely ill patients on ventilators, where as many as 90 percent died. Soon, some doctors tried oxygenating patients with high-flow nasal tubes instead, and that succeeded. Should those doctors have been penalized for trying an alternative?
In October 2020, three distinguished scientists from Harvard University, the University of Oxford and Stanford University published the Great Barrington Declaration, arguing that economically devastating lockdowns being imposed across the U.S. and Europe would save fewer lives than precautions targeted at the elderly and medically fragile only. Yet they were right.
Nothing, not even a virus, is as dangerous to our future health as this silencing of medical debate. All of us, of every political persuasion, must denounce it for our own sakes.

A dozen liberal groups that pressured Twitter advertisers to boycott the platform in response to Elon Musk’s plans to acquire it received money from entities backed by Bill Gates and George Soros, an analysis of public filings shows.
In early May, a group of 26 organizations penned a public letter claiming that the Tesla CEO’s takeover of Twitter would “be a direct threat to public safety” and turn the platform into “a cesspool of misinformation.” The letter called for Twitter’s top advertisers to “hold [Musk] to account” by committing to “non-negotiable” standards for doing business with the site, one of which is to not restore the accounts of political and public figures banned for “egregious violations of Twitter Rules.” The letter contained the logos of Accountable Tech, Media Matters for America, and UltraViolet Action.
An analysis of the public filings and records shows that at least 11 of the letter’s signatories or their affiliated groups have taken money from organizations funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the three groups leading the letter has received over $1 million from billionaire financer George Soros’s grant-making network Open Society Foundations, while the two others were founded in part by former staffers for Barak Obama and Hilary Clinton.
Eight signatories also collected roughly $10.25 million in federal grants and loans between 2020 and 2021, public records show.
The New Venture Fund, the recipient of more than $500 million in grants from the Gates Foundation since 2012, in 2020 gave $180,000 in total to two signees, Media Matters for America and Center for Media Justice. Another $11.2 million of the New Venture Fund’s 2020 grant money went to North Fund, a shadowy progressive nonprofit based in Washington that funnels money to a number of other activist groups, including Accountable Tech, which published the letter.
Accountable Tech’s website shows that two members on its team—its co-founder and digital director—worked for Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. Founded in 2004, Media Matters for America describes itself as a “progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.” A key function of the organization is to provide tools for monitoring what it considers to be “conservative misinformation,” which it defines to be “news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda.”
