I believe Jesus was the one that went against the norms and made it possible for everyone to attain enlightenment/gnosis/the holy spirit. Before that it was guarded by the likes of the Pharisees and Sadducees. "Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.' When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them." (John 12:36) “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father."(John 14:12) . Catholicism was made to hide the true knowledge and use Christianity for control of the populous. I believe Catholicism is straight up idolatry.
