So my Italian professor that taught me Dante had an extra credit question on the final exam. It turns out that the tenth circle is Satan's anus. Satan is upside down and they are climbing down. The stench becomes too much so they climb back up. If you keep this in mind when you read this section, it becomes clear. Really cool stuff.
