You're arguing a technicality. They won the largest number of seats in the Reichstag in the last three parliamentary elections before elections ceased to matter.

Never won nearly enough to do what he did, that's the furthest thing from a technicality imaginable. He begged for that authority, and was granted it. The very next day he began implementing his plans for war which he had made a decade prior, yet wehraboos here falsely claim "he never wanted war."

But if they had failed in the elections, they wouldn't have been in the conversation to be given authority.

Hitler was given authority because of two things - Papen was a "closet" Nazi running under another banner, hoping for a unified right, and belief that the NSDAP represented the will of the German people because of their performance in the Reichstag.

Also, there's a lot to be said about the role of the KPD in ushering the Nazis into power. They suppressed SPD efforts to build a left-centre coalition, it was their joint political efforts with the Nazis that undermined the SPD and allies in the Reichstag and they attacked SPD supporters to suppress their votes leading up to the crucial 1932 elections.
