a) MGS aka METAL/mettle (spirit; courage) GEAR (partial within whole) SOLID/sol (whole)...being implies partial within spirit of whole.

b) Solid Snake aka limbless (inception towards death) reptile (life) within whole. Both reptile/repo + serpent/serpo imply "to creep; to grow along", hence each living being growing along the process of dying.
