This would be the "Kari Lake" method for winning elections, as opposed to the 3am ballot drop, or the 10,000 mules approach.

It's a bluff. The bluff works with big companies because they have a lot to lose and it's cheaper to settle. If someone who's broke makes claims, they can litigate, but that person can get disclosure and depositions. People with deep pockets would need to assist with the legal bills and finding an attorney who isn't afraid of what can happen.
They can take you to civil court, claiming you libeled them. Whether you're found guilty or not is irrelevant since having to mount a legal defense is ruinous by itself.
