He said it worked via inserting those "player club" reward cards into the slot. We all thought he was crazy until we listened long enough to know what to watch for. I'm still not sold, but damn if he didn't notice something fishy
The electronic slot machines I worked on are not random, the reels stop in a pre-programmed sequence so the max payout is known ahead of time (gamble, nudge, hold & nudge and other features etc. might get messed up by the player).
and, of course, some have 'cheats' so you can force a win

Perhaps those he saw knew the cheats and his imagination took over from there
