It's an unenviable position they are in, being manipulated by the same people that manipulate us all. They are pawns in a game they don't understand and by realizing the futility of what they are doing we can better understand our "enemy". I learned in MOUT training it's not the weapons you use or simulate using but the tactics, you could go to any city downtown USA and use squirt guns practicing stacking up and cqb they couldn't do a damn thing about it

Ideally because most people have a surface level view of the world I'd rather it look innocuous which is why I suggested squirt guns. Modern airsoft guns have gotten people shot by people with real guns, the more silly you make it look the less threatened people will feel

Elevated position:
This world is a reflection device, the things you do or say or want are reflected back on you. Everything you wish for has rewards and consequences. The more the wish Is dissonant from the baseline reality the larger the rewards and consequences will be.
If we all wish for the "waking of all everyone from corruption" the simulation will provide variables to get you from point A to B. The soul simulation will provide all the events required to make it to the new wished reality. You would need a corrupted population, and an evil to rebel against.
So in an essence, "they" are actually your own subconscious thoughts that are required to be an enemy so folks can band against them to overcome because that is the reality we are aiming for.
