If you were wondering why all his SNS accounts were taken down, he's likely to stay hiding for some time
There's basically been a sweeping purge in korean gacha companies the last few days for anti-male hate symbols/tweets which sparked retaliations, "since women were unfairly fired, men should also be fired.". It's a long story or another chapter in the so-called south korean gender war.
There's likely other targets in the near future from the same 2D Gallery board
Ig this is also the reason why some of the pv are taken down too, jesus christ this is terrifying
That's for another reason, haa a quick tldr goes as follow:
You basically have:
Angelic Buster, a class in Maplestory, got a fuckton of her story removed with the remaster in Korea, eskalade is now a puppy, edea isn’t begrudgingly dancing anymore. It basically cut relatively "creep" idol culture out.
-> kr players were joking it was a female team responsible but it didn’t go further than a joke (the maplestory director later explained on that during the emergency stream but it's to say there was the start of a sentiment)
To promote and capitalize on her remaster to attract players in, there were several cutesy MVs animations of Angelic Buster released, and some players thought "huhhh, wait it's kinda weird how she does the pinching gesture there, it doesn't really make sense and it's kinda... it couldn't be inserted as some megalia easter egg right?"
Megalia for context is an extreme radical feminist with 🤏 as an icon and frequently used with the anti-male meaning, with a terf branch in Womad who's very infamous in south korea, it's seen as a hate group.
then it comes out as players started to dig out behind the scenes:
a sussy radfem tweets from the angelic buster voice actor (similar to closers tina’s voice actor who got fired for tweeting a Megalia shirt), her case's pretty tame and she just apologized immediately
a very sussy radfem tweets animator, who literally tweeted she'd secretly put the megalia symbol in shits a year ago, deleted all her tweets the moment suspicions started to rise and people started to find out there were a lot of 🤏(aka smoke), in all the works she was involved in from the Root studio, seen as a megalia/radfem hate symbol, that’s how it went from being a maplestory controversy to splash in every game's pv she was involved in including blue archive
Angelic Buster started being memed as Megalic Buster and several korean gacha companies are reviewing ALL the animations they bought from the Root studio to analyze frame by frame, it opened a MASSIVE rabbit hole finding out more and more and purging everything suspicious(basically correcting all the 🤏s out in art/pv/sprites to just clean up the mess for good).
the PD of blue archive officially apologized and announced he’ll get to the bottom of this, same for maplestory who angrily condemned hatred culture, eternal return went to offer refunds and so on, it was treated very seriously by companies.
The animation studio Root really mishandled the apologizing and is now hated by pretty much everyone, game directors who paid them for outsourced animations and consider their trust broken, employees of the game directors who had to do overtime and scrub everything and kr players.
And so, we're looking at the backswing now, retaliation.
I beg someone from Korea to please explain the gender war climate for us idiot outsiders.
I personally suspected since Limbus Company drama that there's no way so many men have such a kneejerk reaction about it. It's obvious that the climate is wayyyyy very different than the west...
I never liked downplaying their (men) complains with derogatory words("incel", "virgin", "loser", "misogynist") words. I never encountered such derogatory terms accused against the women (atleast from outside of Korea), but I also won't accuse them of any such.
I won't state any opinion about who's right or wrong, I just want to get to the bottom of this. I'm an outsider that have never lived in Korea throughout my life and have no rights to criticize any sides.
Basically radical feminism in Korea is just hating on men and literally despising them. Many of them have their own subreddits where they have hate symbols etc. And then there's male communities who hate the radical feminists for their bullshit. The Korean politicians capitalize on this divide and made the crack between them even larger by supporting one side etc. So this gender war is not just a little "haha few misogynistic pricks and a few radical feminists" its quite literally a civil war at this point. When a foreigner looks at korean feminists they might think "oh its just misogynistic eastern asian nation suppressing females grrr", but in reality these feminists long forgotten their original purpose of gender equality and instead want all korean men to die literally (I'm sure there's still good feminists, but they are a minority).
Now I'm a korean who lived in the US for quite a bit so I'm not 100% an expert, but this is a general summary of what I know.
Interesting writeup, that symbol must be a really big deal to spark such backlash, or do you feel it's due to Japanese culture being more polite and such? Is there an equivalent in US culture that would cause an equal uproar with companies forced to take such drastic action?
