The age of covid shined a blinding light on most of humanity's general lack of critical thinking ability as well as its overabundant tendency to act entirely based on unevaluated emotion- that is to say, it showed me that most people are simply automatons devoid of soul.
Once that sunk in as my reality, I largely stopped caring about the masses as I no longer see them as higher beings inhabiting human bodies, but merely inconsequential NPCs filling out this Matrix existence we find ourselves in. That, and the horrible implications their collective, unevaluated actions have on the tiny minority of those who possess souls, still to be swept out to sea by the chaotic currents of mindlessness. Maybe that's the test of this realm that those with souls find themselves in.
I used to believe humanity was so much more than what it's shown itself to be.
The COVID era ruined human society. It reduced our interconnected existence to a paranoid and disjointed mess of wild animals in clothes.
To u/GynaNumbaZero's point about empathy, I think a lot of people permanently lost control of their inner voice. I think the inner voice is affected by stress and adrenaline. I think there are a lot more "zombies" without the privilege of an in-control prefrontal cortex, now.

Underrated comment.
