It is total bullshit based exclusively on the indoctrination, delusions, extreme arrogance and ignorance of those who made that series.
This gives you absolutely nothing to understand Post-Soviet Russia at all. Just a piece of low-quality propaganda with usual cliches and all that stuff.
I wouldn’t know.
I can see how it might be deceptively edited, but there is no narration and minimal subtext. It’s actual footage from the times.
The only things in the US we know and are told about and remember:
1.The Berlin wall fell
2.Yeltsin was an alcoholic
3.Putin took power

This goes into the Russian vets returning from Afghanistan, how the oligarchs came to be by buying stock certificates en masse from poor people…How the US came in and fucked with the Russians and exploited them when they first started feeling out capitalism…
Tanks firing on parliament…
I think it was entertaining and since it’s actual stock footage, has some historical value.
Specifically selected according to the false belifs of creators in how Russia really works, hiding important things and sticking out irrelevant things. In the end, if you follow that series, you will still have same Western narrative about what Russia is and how it really works.

That had zero influence on events or understanding what was going on, really. Like launching Buran-Energia space system or yet another Communist Party congress. Artificialy created deficit of food products had much more significance. But you will not find anything about who and why created that deficit in the series. Series thorougly creating illusion that it happened by itself, because of "wrong and bad socialism failure" or whatever.
oligarchs came to be by buying stock certificates en masse from poor people…
Oligarchs already was in place, with giant sums of money to buy out stock certificates from people. Stock certificates was just a kind of legalisation of oligarchy existence. Also, regular people had no any way to do something with that stock certificates or utilise them other than sell to somebody. This affair with stock certificates was just a show for the West to make illegal privatization of people's property look legit. And it was West idea of how to do that. That is why that affair looks so weird and alien for Russians.
How the US came in and fucked with the Russians and exploited them when they first started feeling out capitalism…
Russians themselves build that weird version of capitalism using US propaganda from movies and books as a template. US role was in infiltrating Russian government and pushing their narratives, sucking Russia into globalist structures control. There are still a lot of that shit here.
Tanks firing on parliament…
That was color revolution when Western-backed liberals took over legitimate higher political authority of the country - Supreme Council and Representatives. It could look strange, because most people was on the side of legitimate authorities and opposed that color revolution. Active shooting and clashes started when snipers from the roof of US embassy shot some people in crowd of Supreme Council supporters. It was a classic western color revolution, with all attributes from loud cries of liberal MSM to the snipers on the side of revolutioneers to incite violence, with one exception - most people on the streets rallied for legitimate authorities, not against them as usual. Western liberal propagandists just was not able to gather any significant amount of people on their side in Russia. So things go weird, up to shooting from tanks on the Parliament building. Top military and police was bribed with insane sums of money to not support Supreme Council. That news about arrests of some top police/military with millions of dollars in cash you may be heard during 2000s-2010s is the traces of that enormous bribe operation. It is the remnants of cash from US embassy delivered by trucks in 1993 to police and military HQs over the country.

I agree about that, but stock footage is the only thing that have some value.
You are welcome. You could dig out that stuff by yourself, but I think it will be not an easy task without knowledge of Russian. Automatic translators help, but to a limited extent, since structure of languages is quite different and many things could be lost in computer translation.
Unfortunately I could not recommend any decent history book on that post-USSR history of Russia, because history is written by winners and after 1993 color revolution liberals apply an enormous efforts to supress any honest historic study of 1991-2000s. So you have to dig a lot in old articles and other artifacts of that time.

What could we expect from BBC, though? :)

Thanks for the reply and for detailing this out. 🫡
