I came close to signing up.

I think i was in between jobs, the economy was shit, i had moved to new town and didn't know many people there and was bored and wanted to shoot machine guns for uncle sam and drive a tank. I took some preliminary test and scored high and they said they'd start me off at higher rank. When it came time to sign I told the guy I had to discuss it with family first then didn't come back.

I've had lots of points in my life where if i had made a different decision or done something slightly different i would be fucked. Makes me believe I have a angel on my shoulder or God whispering in my conscious when I have to make life changing decisions.
