Russia is trying to free the Donbas and it regularly arrests people who post homosexual propaganda so it is helping society far more than your average person is.

I'm not allowed to go into your house to correct your degeneracy. Russia isn't allowed to go into Ukraine's house to correct their degeneracy. Without respect of borders, the world is eternally at war.
Russia is bad because they gave away their power over Ukraine as condition to save Russia from US during 1990s. And now they act like they didn't give Ukraine away, meaning they should have not been spared in the 90's.
Russia also borders China, but I've never seen them invade Xinjiang to save the Uighurs who are allegedly under similar sociocultural existential strain. Perhaps the humanitarian reasons the Kremlin gives for its actions aren't the primary driving force behind their assault?
This is one of the more thoughtful replies I've seen regarding Russian aggression. I think there are some differences between Ukraine and China though. Donbass its filled ethnic Russians who speak Russian and would be happier either being independent or rejoining Russia.
Since 2014 the have been shelled by Kiev on the regular and forced to speak Ukrainian. Russia didn't invade unprovoked either. The Minsk II agreement ended up being more a of stalling tactic that allowed Ukraine to build up resources. They intended to join NATO and were making moves that were perceived by Russia as aggressive.
Then when the conflict did start, the west ensured that there would be no successful peace talks thanks to the likes of Boris Johnson.
This war belongs to Vicky Nuland and Ihor Kolomoyskyi, not Putin.
Russia is desperate for a larger share of global oil distribution, and every other "reason" sprang up after-the-fact as an excuse.
Russia sits in the ISS next to America. Don't forget that all the world's a stage. The outcome has already been decided. All the bombs and media are simply to acclimate the public to the new way of life.
