Liberal leaders don't give a shit about cleanliness. Trust me I lived in Portland for 4.5 years and escaped right after covid. It's hard pressed to hire people to pick up trash from all of the homelessness. Let me tell you, homeless people create a shit load of trash. The more homeless and RVs on the side of the street the more trash. I've seen trash dumps on public land like you wouldn't believe. Once it gets outa hand its just disgusting and no one wants to pick it up. So much for the environment... leadership is "too nice" to freeloader drug addicts while they force property owners to pay a fortune in property taxes. Dirty corrupt leaders create dirty corrupt cities and the people haven't done enough to stand up and put their foot down.
People create cities around ports. Ports enable commerce, cities rise up. Cities get into high density people, living on top of one another. Fighting. Stealing. Killing. People have bad ideas how to handle such things. Some get really tough on crime, put to death a lot of young misguided young adults. Some get really soft on crime, robberies and homicides skyrocket. Commerce keeps growing, politicians keep asking for more money to “solve” the crime problem. More money leads to corruption… people seeking power for its own sake, not to serve the people. Eventually they realize if they keep the crises going, they can always ask for more money and more power, forever.
Geographically, they are very diverse and beautiful lands. Combine that with the opportunity of several pacific-facing ports, and you get a very desireable place for rich people to live. Those rich people then invest and reinvest into local industries, thus producing hollywood, silicon valley, etc. But as the generations who built these behemoths dies out, and is replaced by the generation that takes it all for granted, decay sets in. The current head honchos think everything that was built over the last century is permeant, and that they can endlessly siphon the wealth generated for their own peabrain ideas. Eventually you get what we have now, a much slower but inevitable decay into the next Detroit.
One factor is that people flock to the regions for easy living. These are the people who cannot handle areas needing tougher abilities. Lazy people, weak people. That then gets reflected in their politics.
They need to create problems that they actually have the solution to so that when they launch the reset they can look like heroes. Lawlessness is something they can solve through self enlargement and totalitarianism
The further you get from DC the more willing they are to harm the people for the sake of politics. The closer you are to DC, they harm you instead for the sake of national security.
the actual coast of the west coast is pretty nice. lived in humboldt, coos, clallum, jefferson, and curry counties. Eureka, Aberdeen, & Crescent City aren't great, but other than that, the coast from ~mendocino to the tip of the olympic peninsula isn't bad. certainly no worse than anywhere i've been on the gulf.
now the cities along the I-5 corridor... yeah, they're right fooked.

I would think so, but also look at Minnesota, where Minneapolis is also a (Somali) shithole now. Yet they have blizzards and -20 below.
