We were using 'woke' in various forms in the 90s. Stemming the obvious roots of phrases 'awoke to the fact', 'woke from the dream', 'don't sleep', 'eyes wide open,' etc...
There's no mystery to the definition and origins of woke. Maybe the exact phrase 'stay woke' wasn't coined yet, but there's nothing more to the word than being vigilant and in tune with what's really going on.
So what's 'woke' now as a brand is the opposite of actually being awake.
