I'm kind of interested what's up with the ties in general. It's a part of suit that really does not seem to have any practical purpose whatsoever. All other parts have at least some purpose. How did they come to be? What's the history of the tie?
My immediate guess would be that it's a symbolic collar and a chain around your neck. Kind of a way to symbolize that suit wearer has a master that holds them by the tie.
I think it's to cover shirt buttons. But I don't know, man.. there's something to this, eh. But they wear them too. Betcha if you'd look at freemason stuff there's something.

Still... it's a very strange piece of garment. Not only it's purpose is unclear, but it also gets disproportionate share of attention. There are various knots, patterns, shapes, tie-clips etc. This video is not exception, it kind of proves my point.
