The Japanese culture does believe in this mantra. When fukashima happened, a outpouring of support came from the elderly citizens. While the young and fully able bodied are generally called upon during times of emergency, this case was different and the elderly Japanese generation came forward and nominated themselves to the be ones to go into harm's way and do the cleanup. Their unanimous logic was that they have already lived a full and good life and knew their time here was limited, by stepping up into the danger zone they gave a younger person the opportunity to live a fuller and healthy life.
The headline here is bad, and of course one can spin anything as they want, I'm just stating facts. I for one an damn proud of those folks, as everyone should be by their example. Alas we all live in the time of headline narratives.
