If you do not fully grasp this quote from Karl Rove, one of Bush's senior advisers (from 2004), you don't understand how you are being played:
Reality doesn't matter
The rulers are making the narrative
Media spreads the narrative
You react to the narrative (over reality)
Narrative makers are always thinking 2-5 steps ahead
When you are still reacting to their current narrative, they have already pre-seeded the next 2 narratives with your reactions mixed into them
Antidote:
stop following media
whatever is the consensus mainstream narrative is just there to mislead you. Ignore it, don't comment on it. Somebody asks your opinion, say "whatever"
shiny objects of the weak/week (esp. detailing talking head, sportsmen, celebrities, latest emotional outrageous incident) are just that : diversions to grab your attention. Stop reacting to them.
See what is happening in reality: your employment, your health, your family, your income, your taxes, new legislation, new businesses being built (not promoted).
Disengage from everything, spend time alone and time with friends, talking real stuff, not news/media/celebs/politics/movies/tv-series/music/rest of the mindless crap being fed to you. Talk about value, goals, aspirations, fears, dreams, etc.
