The people. It’s been said only 20% of the Americans weren’t British loyalists.
BUT… the Patriots would’ve lost miserably if not for the support of France. Why the Civil war failed for the confederates is because they couldn’t build meaningful alliances outside of the South.
In order for an armed revolution to start, people would have to be willing to lose everything. Having NOTHING is a good place to start from. As the homeless encampments swell, Americans credit cards max out, inflation continues to rise, more people unemployed, etc., it may be the point at which people rise up. It would be ugly, and millions of people would die.
I pray it never happens.
The people and infrastructure of the South still carry emotional and environmental scars from the war 150 years ago.
It’s easy for people raised on movies to think of a positive outcome of a brutal civil war, and even wish for it, but people have restraint and a disdain for that kind of war until they have no other alternatives.
That means watching people starve to death and whore themselves and their daughters out so they can eat food.
