While I agree with your first sentence... I think that the real problem is that a society that can even contemplate colonizing Mars will be, like ours, quite decadent. The decadence leads to allowing women into leadership 'roles', which, in turn, destroys any capacity the society has to colonize Mars.
There may be other life forms out there without such a stark male/female divide (I don't believe that, but I'll happily be proven wrong with a real example). But our society's 'great filter' is... chicks -- or (((chicks))), if you're into that sort of thing.

There is nothing wrong with woman in power when the only way to receive that job is merit and total responsibility. When there exist any other ways, then you get decadence, ESG and other degradation.
Decadence is a result, not a reason. Meritocracy solves that, that's why even just an idea of meritocracy so hated by all elite around th world, just like an idea of real responsibility of anybody with any grade of power.
Only way to succeed in meritocracy is to acquire more knowledge than others. And unlike with money, you can't steal someone's knowledge to step higher. Unlike with being "special" pervert you can't declare you have knowledge without really having it. And so on. There is no way decadence will somehow make your life easier or more pleasant in meritocracy.
Degradation you see is just people choosing most easy and most pleasant way to live in current system that is designed to allow and breed degradation as much as possible. But there could be other systems.
Do you remeber that NASA is not the only space agency in the world? Others fled to Mars too, and radiation is not even in top 10 problems that had to be solved.
That's really insane how people who have to question everything just blindly believe in all that crap about "deadly" VanAllen belts and "unstoppable" space radiation.
Fuck, the problem (perfectly solveable) of artificial gravity during flight to avoid need for long recreation after landing on Mars is much more important than that "space radiation" which is a question of just using something better than thin aluminium sheet that is used to save fucking fuel.
There is nothing technically or scientifically impossible in colonising Mars.
If some person you don't like declare that he want to do something does not mean that thing he declared is impossible or wrong.
Following that weird logic wiping your ass is stupid shit because Klaus Schwab and Chabad Lubavich rabbies do that.

It was possible since 1970, independent from who and what says. Musk can't change that.
