The Christmas holiday has been ruined by commercialism and materialism.
It's become this weird holiday of conspicuous consumption.
The use of the name "Santa Claus" on gifts to the needy families was a way to give gifts anonymously. Many years ago, individuals would rather die than accept a gift. Gifts bring an obligation to return a gift in kind. But a gift from Santa left at the door in the middle of the night does not.
Even the lump of coal was a welcome gift for the poor. But our society has turned the meaning into that only bad children (poor children) get bad gifts. And that very good kids (rich kids) are showered with a mountain of presents.
