You don't need growth to make a recovery, you just need a compelling story and confusing technicalities.
Gas was $0.20/gal in 1940. If you went back in time and told them it's $5+ today, they'd wonder how you survive and why you aren't rioting. But because of the fiat narrative, we still get to fill our tanks and it works out.
Not sure if they'll be able to continue the trickery with the population shrinking, though.
