The reason the shadow lengths are different is because the light source is not hitting the objects at the same distance, location. The sun travels on a trajectory and its small and close, so two locations yield different shadows unless on the same latitude.
Try placing two meter sticks inside of a room with a single light source 5 meters apart, and see if your thesis hold up.
