Let’s say a 70 year pattern, fastest mode of travel:
- 1800: Horse*
- 1870: Locomotive
- 1940: Rocket
- 2010: Still rocket …

To my knowledge the fastest craft today are “hypersonic” and supposedly work by creating pockets/bubbles/low pressures around the craft to reduce drag significantly. Supposedly they work in water and air by similar principles. They are not available to us in any case, and may be fictional.
