Yeah thats actually how I ended up getting poisoned. I was just physical labor on a truck taking refrigerators and freezers out of peoples homes for a appliance retirement rebate.
There was an american side and a canadian side. They were a contractor that did this work for different states and provinces. The vice president of the american side came up to canada and fired everyone in ontario. Then layed off our supervisor in nova scotia. Replaced him with a woman who wouldnt know her butt from a hole in the ground, let alone anything about refrigerant.
My coworker said yep were gonna get the boot too. I said nah were good employees, well I thought we were. We were able to do about twice as much work as the temporary workers could do. Took pride in trying to make everyone happy and do a good job yada yada. But he was right they got rid of us too.
Said they could do the job cheaper by hiring third party moving crews. Ok whatever. And thats where I fucked up.
I had only worked there 1 year as a temp, 1 year full time. I wasnt entitled to severance, my partner was off work. They were nervous about me taking unemployment to find a better job. Jesus christ.
They asked me to take a "freon disposal technician" job for 17$ a hour. My dumbass took it. I remember my coworker saying, "They couldnt pay me enough to poison me." I thought he was joking.
Things were even fine for a few weeks, and then they had me rip out the conveyor system and suddenly I was draining these units 5 at a time with water tubing and simple pressure fittings. Fucking nightmare. Thats when I started getting an increase in palpitations. I took that for bout 5 months before I had to call it quits. When my supervisor found the machine spraying freon out, I was done.
To this day nova scotia still says that freon cant cause irregular heartbeat and that they dont need to do any air tests or help me.
Fucking insane.
Anyway I know long rant, but my whole point is. Trust your gut.
And whats even funnier? 6 months later they fired the moving crews and hired full time employees again.
I dont know why corporations and governments arent bound to the same rules people are.
