Why would he feel the need to destroy the contents of his laptop and phone?

The generalized scenario:

FBI anonymously provides links to illegal pornography.
FBI observes who collects it
FBI anonymously blackmails: we will turn the evidence to police unless you XYZ. Your life is over either way. Do you want to be seen as a pedophile or as randomly violent?

Epstein-style blackmail. Gun control.
