My guess is that once the newspapers revealed Epstein's blackmail methods, now everyone has the play in their handbook. Could be many groups using the same trick: the internet's reach is global.
Sirhan Sirhan claimed he was mind controlled by the CIA. He detailed a number of the mind control methods used, but was written off as a crazy nut-case. However FOIA documents later revealed that the CIA's MK Ultra experiments were using techniques almost identical to what Sirhan Sirhan detailed.... creepy.
The British hypnotist Derren Brown had a TV show called "The Experiments" where he tested various mind-control techniques. In the show, he claims he was able to hypnotize a person enough where he could use an activation word which would cause the person to assassinate a specific target. On the show, the "assassin" attempted to shoot Stephen Fry on stage (with blanks) in front of an audience.
Whether or not Brown's techniques worked for real or not is something you would need to decide for yourself by watching the show, however I've heard interviews with Brown since, and apparently the person hypnotized as an assassin has experienced PTSD from the show.
TLDR; The CIA had MK Ultra and maybe used it on Sirhan Sirhan and Derren Brown used the same tricks on a guy on TV.
Why would he feel the need to destroy the contents of his laptop and phone?
The generalized scenario:
FBI anonymously provides links to illegal pornography.
FBI observes who collects it
FBI anonymously blackmails: we will turn the evidence to police unless you XYZ. Your life is over either way. Do you want to be seen as a pedophile or as randomly violent?
Ok so correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the 3rd shooter this year with unusual coercion from online sources?
It certainly seemed less frequent in the past.

As long as they got the most important detail...
Is this anything other than conjecture?
Nope. Pure speculation based on the FBI finding the laptop in the oven and phone in the mall toilet.
It could have been anyone who put him up to this. Or it could be that he's just timid of his saved school essay documents and instagram DM history.
I just call them how I see them and retract as necessary, which is rarely.

Epstein-style blackmail. Gun control.
