I always kinda speculated that they could just use textual analysis of social media to find candidate nut cases. Of course, the terribly confounding problem with that is that about 98% of them would be some type of paid shills, maybe even some of their own. And they're just soulless buttholes, not the nut cases they're looking for.
Yes, and modern AI is capable of doing that analysis. I wonder whether they also have some pipeline from psych doctors - the obvious candidates will be young, on SSRIs, and have gun experience.
Just as a rule of thumb I always go by, "If I can think it up sitting around the house, then They can think it up too, and have huge networks and billions in resources to follow up on it." It puts a lot of "crazy ideas" squarely in the realm of possibility.
