Did you ever tried to build such table and have a dinner on it? :) I did. As usual, things that looks cool does not always cool to use.
Just take a coffee table with glass top (or put a glass sheet on the cardboard box), cover it with white paper or semi-transparent plastic and put a lamp under the surface. Then try to dinner on that thing. You will be amased.
You will barely see anything in your plate and will experience problems with using fork to eat something from the plate. :) Light from table surface overload your eyes making you unable to see what's in the plate.

You still can not catch it in the plate with the fork if you don't see it. Well, when it is GMO human flash that is glowing in the dark.... :)
IDK, looks like it is some kind of childish show off, just like ugly and senseless but insane expensive woman handbags or man costumes and ties.
I got a used one of those tables, turned it into a drafting table, and now all the houses I design are haunted A.F.
