I just recently talked to a few friends about this phenomenon. I honestly think upwards 85% of people have little to no internal monolog. I don't know how to describe it other than they are less sentient than those who do think in words. It was a frightening revelation but it explains why most people behave like cattle.
I think part of the reason our internal monologs may be more intense is similar to when you try to sedate someone against their will. The person gets a burst of adrenaline and becomes more awake than ever to respond to the threat. Its the same with us, we see how they are trying to sedate, hypnotize, program us, so our minds are waking up more than ever in response.
