The theory is that as our solar system moves around the center of our galaxy, it travels through a magnetic field that reverses the polarity of solar system roughly every 12,000 years. This may cause the sun to micro nova and the earth to rotate 90 degrees.

I see evidence for a precession (not literally a 90-degree rotation) about 4500 years ago and evidence that the poles have reversed in the past (I forget the dates on that). Haven't seen it tied to galactic fields but it makes sense. Will keep an eye out for further contribs to this thread, thanks Axolotl.
This video provides an interesting perspective on the matter, and shows a clear “cosmic cycle” or maybe “periodic catastrophe”, which isn’t necessarily tied to one cause (i.e. not just asteroids, or solar flares, or pole shifts, or rapid tectonic plate shift, but all of those and others, which seems to “line up” with a chronological periodicity)
