The moon landing being a hoax is as close to fact as any "conspiracy" could possibly get. Frankly you haven't past the tutorial if you still believe the moon landing.
The last part makes more sense than anything else. The US is removing all history of White Male accomplishment or Actual American values, those parts they can't erase, they twist into something racist, or homophobic, or anti - {Current Thing}

Don't create some dime a dozen tape for future recordings, write-over a bunch of priceless tape with unique footage which everyone can agree with is irreplaceable.
I don't know, or care, for what was on the original tapes. But if they did this, it had something incriminating on it.
