If you mean that Edwin Gray circuits with battery, switches rectifier, capacitor and transformer, I know about them, but didn't try to build them.
As for oversimplified Gray's version with 3 batteries and lamp with periodical connecting batteries in parallel to restore charge - that does not work for me, batteries just eventually discharged and that's all. Should have been tried it with capacitors but I didn't. Also it could be intersting to implement that circuit using charge pump IC ICL7660 and capacitors, but I doubt it will give any interesting result.
