Bear in mind Russia's 'annex' of Crimea occurred after the 2014 Ukraine Color Revolution Coup. Russia couldn't allow Crimea to fall to the Neo-Nazi's so Putin called out Obama by literally crossing Obama's "Red-Line".

Its also worth noting Ukraine has been Russian since at least 1700's. Ukraine and its people are Russian thru and thru.
