NATO expansion. There are other causal variables, but this one has the largest explanatory power and this has been warned about for decades.
Russia, or dare I say Putin, is not a good guy here, but Ukraine in NATO would be the same as when the US placed nukes in Turkey. The Russians responded by putting nukes in Cuba. The result was the Cuban missile crisis.
What I've never seen before, is a good explanation for the elite western leaders' hatred of Russia, and why the huge shift. In the 1980s, liberals looked to the Soviet Union as a model.
NATO facilitated a large portion of the multi-state coalition that invaded Afghanistan. And the air bombing for Balkan wars in the 1990s. It's offensive as well. Saying it's defensive is classic double-speak.
Secondly, NATO the same as the entangling alliances that led to WWI and WWII. What country wants to be surrounded by nations with that, basically giving any of them cover for offensive actions if there is a defensive response?
Russia is asshole, but don't discount the problem with Biden, Bush, Obama, Trump, being assholes too.
For me, this fact doesn't excuse invasion, rather it fortifies my condemnation (since Ukraine was separated from the USSR at the end of the cold war, this invasion threatens the terms of our peace).
But also, them having been the same government for so long, opens the question whether it's all a ruse. Especially since the US Communist Party 🐴 leader's son is also involved in Ukraini corruption.
I always default to the idea that RUS and USA have a protection racket going on, being the two biggest fists on the planet. I don't trust either of them.
Biden in his SOTU said they worked for months to figure out how to falsify the Russian invasion.

"NATO is a defensive alliance (and a joke)"

Is this not true?
