It's also the "Defender of the Fatherland Day" in Russia. And it's an army holiday all around the former Soviet states. So yeah, I don't think Putin chose it by accident.

In Russia and Belarus too. It is old USSR holiday "Soviet Army Day" transformed into local ones.
