Right, I can see some people believing this. Same way they used to burn candles and give indulgence money to pay down sins, they only view actions as counting, but not thoughts or intentions. And in addition to great cover, they really enjoy painting their efforts as philanthropic, perhaps they believe it helps, they are superstitious.
