If anything the views from the space station, the Q&A sessions, the mars rovers, etc., are to distract us from what is really going on in space. My guess is space is actually really developed with bases on nearly every planet and moon.

The largest powers in the world, the billionaires, and the bankers have probably already divvied up the solar system and are already exploiting the planets and moons for rare earth minerals and precious metals to make themselves wealthier than we can imagine.
