There have been loads of chans and chan style sites, many been and gone, and there are still new ones being made. Most are blocked on search engines. I've only discovered obscure ones after seeing them mentioned on 4chan. You seriously do not want to visit most of them. 4chan /pol/ is like sunday school compared to some I've seen, and not in a remotely good way.
8chan was becoming a solid alternative until the New Zealander Tarrant posted there just before the ChristChurch happening, which pretty much ended the site.. It's replacement is 8kun but it's not very busy and apparently gets flooded with child porn from time to time so it's not really worth it.
I did notice this funny new one though, dedicated specifically to new meme generation:
