My interpretation is that it is the morning star, presumably Venus. When people see the dawn twilight, a natural assumption is that it is caused by Venus: the brightest object in the sky that has appeared from the east, the same direction as the new morning light. That would be a mistake, however. The true cause is the approaching sun that is not yet visible--the real light bringer.
Ponder this, the nature of truth, lies and incomplete or flawed knowledge, and figures such as Lucifer, the serpent of Eden, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and Prometheus. I'd say the story is deep and meaningful.
