Jesus rebuked them on a number of occasions because they were so focused upon legalism that they missed the main idea. They showered minor nuances in interpretation to distort the truth and to divide people. Jesus is clear that knowledge of the law is not what’s important.
Matthew 23: “ 11 Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others. 12 If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.
Jesus came because he cared about his people wanted them to be free. He wants us to follow him through the gates of Heaven not be caught up in trying to “sneak” in through legalism.
John 10: “ 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
It’s not about following some arbitrary set of laws it’s about having a relationship with Jesus which happens through faith.
Imagine you had kids and they were super antagonistic towards you but they followed all of the rules you made and every time you create a new rule they find a new loophole. Your goal is to have a relationship with them not to govern them. You can’t regulate someone into loving you.
