I can tell you in a glance that's a shitty place for a base. You're down at the bottom of a valley, where incoming can be lobbed at you from both sides from a distance with you unable to effectively return fire. There's a reason they build castles on hilltops.
It's a sad thing when you have to destroy your career as an officer to stand up against something stupid your chain is doing, but sometimes it's what you have to do. That's why the guys who weren't mustangs had zero spine.
