David E. Martin on the issue of Afghan as "nation" and and as a "trade route". It is more like a drug trade station:

We are in Afghanistan, because:

drugs (opium, CIA black ops funding)
estimated one trillion dollars worth of rare earth metals (for electrification of transport)
organized crime, money laundering
weapons of warfare sales (USA built big part of it's domestic manufacturing economy on war manufacturing)

It's very simple to anyone who has been paying any attention to global geopolitics and trade for the past 40 years.
