both are well north of the equator, so the shortest path between them seems to curve to the north on a map.

That is why they fly west of Lake Athabasca and east of Finland?

Maybe. Something like 99% of maps are inaccurate.

I have a solution. Lets place the north pole at the center of all our maps, then suddenly world maps will start making sense.

Maybe plot it on a globe and it'll make more sense. Great circle routes are much faster, and must be adjusted for the Earth spinning beneath you when you fly.

When Felix Baumgartner did the high altitude jump from a balloon he proved that the earth does not spin beneath us when we are in the air, as he landed about where he took off. He officially reached a altitude of 128.000 feet and his ascension took about 2.5 hours. He landed 44 miles east of his launch site.

You know you can steer while free falling through the atmosphere, right?

I think Felix was more worried about stopping himself from spinning as he hit mach 1 then steering.

  • I have been in a violent spin for a long time. Feels like I have to pass out.
