Maybe plot it on a globe and it'll make more sense. Great circle routes are much faster, and must be adjusted for the Earth spinning beneath you when you fly.
When Felix Baumgartner did the high altitude jump from a balloon he proved that the earth does not spin beneath us when we are in the air, as he landed about where he took off. He officially reached a altitude of 128.000 feet and his ascension took about 2.5 hours. He landed 44 miles east of his launch site.
